Throughout the world, Mother’s Day is seen as an occasion to give a present to someone special in our lives – someone we truly (and instinctively) care about. It can be the event to gift something a bit more inspirational and meaningful than usual.

It is believed that the Sunday of mid-Lent (towards the end of March) was a day on which, in the past, offerings were made at the high altar of the ‘Mother-church’. Derived from this, began the tradition whereby sons and daughters made visits to their parents – and especially to see their mother, so it became known as “Mothering Sunday.” Indeed, for many years, this special Sunday was reserved so that children and young people living away from their parents could go home for the occasion, taking presents such a cake for their mother, and sharing a meal with their family. This day was particularly meaningful for apprentices, live-in farm-workers, and girls in service, and it was generally accepted that they had the right to have the day off.

In France, the event is celebrated on the last Sunday in May. The entire extended family gathers around the dining table for dinner, and at the end of the meal a beautiful cake is presented to Maman.

More info on El Camino:

The 1,000-year-old Way of St. James (El Camino de Santiago - in Spanish), criss-crosses Western Europe, arriving at Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain on the Atlantic coast. At least 200,000 people travel to the city each year from all over the world: Some people walk, others travel by bike. Many travellers choose to do the Camino for personal, rather than any spiritual or religious reasons - taking time out from their busy, modern lives and perhaps finding inspiration along the way, whilst reflecting on their lives in a supportive environment. Many carry with them a Scallop shell like this. Everyone experiences the journey in a different way.

Whatever somebody’s journey - whether on El Camino itself, on holiday, a business trip, a gap year, trekking, etc, many friends and loved-ones like to pass on a special gift to wish the recipient well on their travels - and safekeeping along the way. This necklace is perfect for that purpose. In addition to any value that the Camino charm symbol has in itself, or the religious faith that it might represent, this necklace can also act as a reminder to be careful when travelling. And this can be a powerful aid to staying safe whilst away from home. Would make a perfect Farewell gift.

Gift this pretty scallop shell necklace to tell your friends and loved-ones that you are thinking of them or that you'll miss them, and to take care . . it's a really meaningful gift. Comes gift-wrapped, like all our presents - and we can print a personal message on your behalf.
