Wedding favours are small presents which the bride and groom give to their guests during the occasion of a wedding ceremony or wedding reception to pass on their good luck. The tradition of giving wedding favors dates back many centuries to when European aristocrats (originally the French) would give a gift of a bonbonniere to their wedding guests to take home – a small box that contained sugar confectionery. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced to the event and, over time, replaced the bonbonniere. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds were presented in the confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. By giving these favours to their guests at the reception, the bride and groom are passing on their best wishes and good fortune, and make perfect and traditional keepsakes for all the wedding guests.

Other traditions concern the bride and groom. For example, the groom is supposed to carry a small mascot or charm in his pocket on the wedding day . . for good luck. In some parts of the United Kingdom it’s also traditional for the bride to place a new coin in her shoe for good luck. The best man should pay the fee of the minister in an odd amount of money in order to bring good fortune to the newly-wed couple. Ivy in a wedding bouquet, assures good fortune, lilies signify purity, apple blossoms, better things to come, and myrtle is supposed to bring luck. Egyptian women are known to pinch the bride on her wedding day for luck and in Holland a pine tree is planted outside the newlyweds home for fertility.

Do you know someone who is sentimental to these sort of customs and who perhaps would appreciate a uniquely inspirational and meaningful present at their wedding day event? . . or some unique ‘gifts with meaning’ for the wedding party or guests?

. . full of Spanish vibrance for good luck wishes

This ceramic tile features the lucky Indalo, recognised in Spain as a symbol of protection and good fortune. People who are lucky think positively, look for opportunities and are always open to possibilities.

The legend of the Indalo originates in Almería, eastern Andalucía, in southern Spain - an area of Europe where you can still find Moorish arches alongside Catholic towers, white villages scattered across verdant hills, and dry and dusty valleys behind sierras that roll down to the Mediterranean shores. The Indalo symbol is steeped in the history of this region and is said to have magical powers to offer protection from harm, and bring happiness and good fortune. No home should be without one.

Glazed tiles such as this can be used as coasters, feature tiles for bathrooms or kitchens, or as part of a collection.

Dimensions: 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 1/6"

Something a bit different - and with real meaning . . a unique gift. Comes gift-wrapped, like all our presents (with an information card about the Indalo) - and we can print a personal message on your behalf.
