Wedding favours are small presents which the bride and groom give to their guests during the occasion of a wedding ceremony or wedding reception to pass on their good luck. The tradition of giving wedding favors dates back many centuries to when European aristocrats (originally the French) would give a gift of a bonbonniere to their wedding guests to take home – a small box that contained sugar confectionery. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced to the event and, over time, replaced the bonbonniere. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds were presented in the confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. By giving these favours to their guests at the reception, the bride and groom are passing on their best wishes and good fortune, and make perfect and traditional keepsakes for all the wedding guests.

Other traditions concern the bride and groom. For example, the groom is supposed to carry a small mascot or charm in his pocket on the wedding day . . for good luck. In some parts of the United Kingdom it’s also traditional for the bride to place a new coin in her shoe for good luck. The best man should pay the fee of the minister in an odd amount of money in order to bring good fortune to the newly-wed couple. Ivy in a wedding bouquet, assures good fortune, lilies signify purity, apple blossoms, better things to come, and myrtle is supposed to bring luck. Egyptian women are known to pinch the bride on her wedding day for luck and in Holland a pine tree is planted outside the newlyweds home for fertility.
